Almost Done
Well, my first week here is almost over. I've survived. I've learned a lot. I worked for an hour or so in the hotel last night. I can do this.
By now, you should all know that I'm a quest to find outstanding Mexican food. I tried some of the local eats last night at Garcia's. It was pricier than Border Cafe and I don't think it was as yummy. However, they had sopapillas for dessert. They were messy and I was covered in honey by the end, but it was completely worth it! I had discovered sopapillas in New Mexico back in January.
After dinner I explored Wegman's. I was really impressed. They have a wide selection of pre-cooked food. I may head there for lunch today for soup and sandwich. However, walking up and down the aisles was almost like shopping in another country! They had a wide assortment of brands that I'd never heard of! I also noticed that the cost of living is MUCH lower here. For example, it's not strange to see a full-price bottle of soda for $1.69 in the grocery stores at home. The regular price of a bottle of soda here was $1.29. I also noticed my lunch at McDonald's was only $5.88 where I spend close to $7 on the same meal at home.
One of the guys on our project is from California. We were talking about the locations where we've been previously staffed. He was on a project in Hawaii. The Per Diem rate in Hawaii is $116/day!!! For those of you who don't know about Per Diem, that's the amount of money they give you for food each day!!! I get $44/day here in Geneva. I can't even begin to think what I'd do with that kind of Per Diem money. He said he used it for a down payment on his house! Nice. I'm putting a lot of mine towards home improvements.
